The MGB is the only 1960s roadster still spotted with some regularity on British roads. A blend of rorty performance, mechanical simplicity and low running costs make it the classic sports car of choice for enthusiasts of all ages.
Those same qualities have long cemented the MGB’s place in historic motorsport, too. More than 60 years after launch, it remains one of the most affordable ways to go racing.
The MGB featured here will be sold by Iconic Auctioneers at the Iconic Sale on 20 February, taking place during the Race Retro event at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. A 1964 pull-handle model prepared to FIA specification, it’s eligible for a broad range of UK and European events.
A race car with proven pedigree

Originally built by MG Motorsport, a well respected name in MG circles, the car comes with a detailed history file that charts its time with previous owners.
Its FIA papers have just been renewed and are valid until 2035. Recent highlights of the MGB racing calendar include the new Generations Trophy, first staged at Silverstone in 2025, which drew attention for its family driver pairings and strong grids.
The MG has already taken part in Equipe, CSCC, Classic K and Swinging 60s events. Indeed, cars such as this one are precisely the type that series organisers and competitors look for.
Maintained by MG Motorsport

The MGB’s 1,798cc engine was rebuilt by MASS shortly before its present ownership and has now completed around 14 hours of running. The vendor carried out some routine maintenance, then returned the car to MG Motorsport for further work, including a gearbox overhaul and replacement half-shaft.
Safety equipment is all in-date, including the harness belts, driver’s racing seat and fire extinguisher. As with any competition car, however, Iconic Auctioneers suggests that buyers check the suitability and age of items such as the roll cage before entering their chosen series.
Finished in bright Tahiti Blue, the car looks very well presented. A spares package accompanies the sale, including a Cobra Monaco seat, ignition components and six additional alloy wheels, plus various items that competitors will likely appreciate.
Your entry into historic motorsport

With its professional build, known provenance, up-to-date paperwork and proven track record, this MGB represents an appealing route into a branch of motorsport that is both welcoming and busy.
Eligible for a variety of events, and supported by an unmatched parts network, it offers the sort of approachable, good-value racing that has helped sustain the MGB for decades.
For anyone considering their first historic racing car, or looking to add a well-sorted MGB to an existing garage, this 1964 example is worth a look. Check out the Iconic Auctioneers listing for more photos, and to register for bidding. The estimated sale price is between £40,000 and £45,000.
