Auction Car of the Week: 1985 Mercedes-Benz 230 GE

Born from a royal request and initially designed for military duty, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class – better known as the G-Wagen – is famed for its rugged functionality and distinctive, angular styling.

In recent years, the G-Wagen has become a luxury SUV to rival the Range Rover – particularly when fitted with AMG V8 engines. However, earlier versions of this boxy off-roader appeal to enthusiasts for their toughness and no-nonsense charm.

This particular 1985 Mercedes-Benz 230 GE automatic, up for sale with Iconic Auctioneers, highlights exactly why the ‘G’ has earned such a loyal following. Originally registered in the UK on 1 January 1985, it remained here for nearly three decades before relocating to Dublin, Ireland.

Life begins at 40

With five owners in total (four in the UK and one in Ireland) the three-door Mercedes has enjoyed 40 years of notably careful ownership.

Remarkably, this example has avoided the need for any welding repairs during its lifetime: an uncommon achievement considering the propensity for Mercedes-Benz vehicles of this era to rust.

Its original, military-style green paint only has one minor blemish beneath the spare wheel, typical for these models. The beige and brown cloth interior is equally well preserved, with its standard-issue Mercedes-Benz first aid kit still untouched and wrapped in its original plastic.

EU better get bidding

The car comes with its original book pack and a comprehensive collection of invoices and MOT certificates covering its history. Currently registered in Ireland, it could readily be re-imported to the UK, where it would likely reclaim its original registration number or remain conveniently EU-registered.

Iconic Auctioneers is featuring this Mercedes 230 GE in a current online auction, which concludes this Thursday (12 June 2025).

The car represents an opportunity to acquire a particularly authentic and well-documented example of this classic off-roader. Iconic’s estimated sale price for the G-Wagen is between £20,000 and £25,000.
