Few vehicles wear their working past as openly as an ex-Ministry of Defence Defender. Built for hard graft and trusted by the British armed forces for decades, these short-wheelbase Defender 90 soft-tops are arguably ‘peak’ Land Rover.
This particular 1991 Defender is being offered by Iconic Auctioneers in an online sale that closes on 27 November.
Recently refurbished, it has been returned to its original specification and painted once again in MOD-spec olive drab. With a basic cabin and uncomplicated engineering, it’s a reminder of the Defender’s rugged roots – long before soft leather and infotainment touchscreens entered the picture.
True to its military roots
The Defender 90 was in service during an era when such vehicles were a familiar sight on bases across the UK and abroad. Its appeal today lies in the same qualities that made them trusted military vehicles: robust construction, mechanical simplicity and the sort of durability that will shrug off years of outdoor life.
The refurbishment of this 90 is comprehensive without straying from authenticity. Its repainted exterior is complemented by a new hood, while its chassis has been steam-cleaned and Waxoyled.
Inside, it remains true to its utilitarian purpose, with black vinyl trim and a layout focused entirely on function. Power comes from a 2,495cc naturally aspirated diesel engine, which drives all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. A full set of matching Michelin tyres is fitted, too.
Ready for civilian duty
Iconic Auctioneers will supply the Defender serviced and with a fresh MOT, so the winning bidder can put it to work straight away. Whether that work involves muddy lanes, smallholding duties or weekend adventures with the roof rolled back is up to its next owner.
With an estimate of £12,000 to £15,000, this is an accessible route into classic Land Rover ownership, especially for those drawn to the marque’s military heritage. Ex-MOD Defenders have a loyal following and continue to rise in profile as interest grows in honest, usable classic cars.
