Auction Car of the Week: Ford Escort RS Cosworth

Born from rallying as a road-legal homologation special, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth is an icon among 1990s performance cars.

It was based largely on the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4×4, rather than the Mk5 Escort, and combined aggressive styling with serious pace. A 2.0-litre turbocharged engine built by Cosworth delivered 230hp to all four wheels.

Few cars of the era so effectively bridged the gap between motorsport and road use, or captured the public imagination so completely. Even former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson bought one.

Tuned to deliver 340hp

This 1994 Escort RS Cosworth, offered from long-term family ownership, was originally supplied by Wylie’s Ford dealership in Glasgow. Its second owner, a dedicated enthusiast, acquired the car in 1998 after an extensive search.

Finished in special-order Moondust Silver – a rarely specified option – the car was resprayed in 1999 following a Ford recall to address known paint issues.

The early ‘big turbo’ engine has been subtly upgraded by Castle Performance Engineering, who remapped the ECU to deliver 340hp via a five-speed manual gearbox. The result is a more urgent yet still usable driving experience, retaining the gruff Cosworth character and boosting performance.

Concours-winning condition

Maintained to a very high standard, this RS Cosworth has collected a number of concours trophies over the years, including a class win at the 2011 European Ford event in The Netherlands.

Accompanying documents include the car’s original book pack, MOT history, invoices and proof of a recent full service completed in April 2025.

Testament to its condition, this car (registered ‘DFP 454’, although the private plate won’t be included in the sale) was chosen by toy manufacturer Corgi as the basis for a forthcoming die-cast model – due in the shops soon.

A whale of a tail

Iconic Auctioneers will offer the ‘Cossie’ at the Classic Sale, held during the Wheeler Dealer Live event at Bicester Heritage on 1 June 2025.

With its blend of originality, enthusiast ownership and concours presentation, it offers a tempting proposition for enthusiasts of modern classic Fords.

You can find out more or to register to bid by visiting the Iconic Auctioneers website. The estimate to own this desirable fast Ford is between £50,000 and £55,000.
