Auction Car Of The Week: Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Supersport

Before 1989, buyers of the Porsche 911 Carrera could specify the 911 Turbo’s deeper bumpers, broader wheelarches and ‘Tea Tray’ rear spoiler. Created from the Porsche options catalogue, the result was an unofficial ‘Turbo‑look’ 911.

For the model’s final year, Porsche bundled these parts together with the Turbo’s uprated brakes and suspension under option code M491. The package also gained its own identity as the Carrera 3.2 Supersport (‘SSE’ in factory shorthand).

The Supersport combined the linear power delivery, reliability and lower running costs of the Carrera’s naturally aspirated flat‑six engine with the visual drama of a 911 Turbo.

For the last hurrah of the original Porsche 911, fewer than 180 UK‑market Supersports were built – making them rarer than a 911 Turbo. The 1989 example seen here, offered for sale by Iconic Auctioneers, is from that closing chapter and features the later (and much sought-after) G50 five‑speed manual gearbox. Its odometer shows just 6,114 miles, making it one of the lowest mileage Supersports left.

Shades of Grey

Stone Grey Metallic paint over Linen and Burgundy leatherette upholstery is thought to be a one‑off combination. The Porsche’s paint retains a deep and even lustre, while its 16‑inch Fuchs alloy wheels look brand new.

Inside, the electrically adjustable sports seats are barely worn. A Blaupunkt Toronto cassette player heads up an eight‑speaker audio system in perfect working order. Factory-fitted options include a sunroof and rear wiper.

First registered by Porsche Centre Swinford in March 1989, the Supersport is accompanied by its original book pack, stamped service record, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, spare keys (including the red valet key) and a stack of MOT certificates and invoices.

Maintenance has continued in spite of the car’s very low mileage. The latest service was carried out by a respected classic Porsche specialist in April 2024, when the odometer showed 6,043 miles.

Almost hammer time

The Supersport heads to the rostrum at the Iconic Sale, held during Supercar Fest at Sywell Aerodrome on 17 May 2025. With its ultra‑low mileage, distinctive colour scheme and end‑of‑production specification, it should appeal strongly to collectors of air‑cooled Porsche 911s.

A new MOT and clear HPI report will be supplied with the car, and both engine and chassis numbers match the Stuttgart factory records. Private viewings are available through Iconic Auctioneers ahead of the sale.
