Toyota has announced it will begin reproducing a range of engine components for one of its most legendary cars.
The AE86-generation Corolla, made between 1983 and 1987, has developed a global cult following, thanks in part to it starring in various video games, and featuring in Japanese manga and anime.
In particular, the Initial D street racing manga series featured the rear-wheel-drive AE86 as the lead character’s dual-purpose drift racer and tofu delivery car.
Such widespread enthusiasm led Toyota Gazoo Racing’s GR Heritage Parts Project to focus its efforts on the AE86.
Harder, faster, stronger

The GR Heritage Parts range covers a host of classic Toyotas, such as previous versions of the Supra sports car, along with multiple generations of the Land Cruiser 4×4.
Now, GR Heritage will reproduce the cylinder head and cylinder block sub-assemblies for the 125hp 1.6-litre 4A-GE engine, as used in the AE86 and other models during the 1980s.
Compared to the original engine, durability has been improved with the use of higher-rigidity cast iron and simulation-based modification of the crank-cap structure.
In response to demand from customers, the intake and exhaust ports have also been given thicker walls,. The ability to mount the engine in front-wheel-drive models has been added, too.
Continuing the AE86 legacy

The 4A-GE engine is a key part of the AE86 legend, as highlighted when we drove Toyota UK’s heritage fleet Corolla GT.
“Let’s start with the twin-overhead-cam engine, which offers vivid throttle response and revs all the way to 7,700rpm. It sounds fantastic, too, the noise hardening to a visceral snarl as the needle passes 4,500rpm”, said Retro Motor’s Tim Pitt.
Toyota announced the release of the latest GR Heritage parts during an event at Fuji Speedway in Japan.
The special two-day meeting celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Initial D manga series, along with the host of aftermarket parts available for the AE86 Corolla.
Deliveries of the reissued GR Heritage Parts are expected to begin in early 2026.
